Decisions of the BUEB Leadership & Student Union Operational Working Group (November 3rd, 2025)
15. Adjustment of foreign language requirements
- The foreign language requirements of the 2023 sample curricula were created under a previous regulatory framework and differ significantly from the corresponding requirements of the currently valid curricula. Therefore, it is justified to amend these requirements fairly within this semester. The Working Group thus proposes the harmonization of the foreign language requirements of the 2023 curricula with those of the more recent sample curricula, to be implemented still this semester.
- In practice, only the completion of professional language courses would remain mandatory (which may still be substituted with a language certificate), while requirements related to professional subjects taught in a foreign language and language-specific final exams would be abolished.
- The change may take effect following Senate approval (already applying to students taking their final exams in January 2026).
16. Equalization of second foreign language requirements in “bilingual” programmes
- As a nationally outstanding service, BUEB allows students to fulfil their foreign language requirements in all six major secondary school languages. However, many (both Hungarian and international) students at the University possess foreign language proficiency in other languages.
- This situation has been a particular source of difficulty in the so-called bilingual programmes. To address this, the Working Group proposes that the professional language course or the “Business and Social Sciences in a Foreign Language” course required in the second foreign language may be completed in any language course (for non-Hungarian students, including “Hungarian as a foreign language”) or substituted by certified knowledge of another foreign language.
17. Supporting the progress of students close to graduation
- To help students studying under the phasing-out curricula (2024 or earlier) make smoother academic progress, the Working Group proposes abolishing the prerequisite and entry requirements defined in the sample curricula.
- The change may take effect following Senate approval.
18. Theses, final exams, and TDK (Scientific Students’ Associations)
- The requirements for theses and the professional topics of final exams are now available for all graduating students.
- The Working Group proposes the standardization and clarification of degree classification calculations, establishing slightly more favourable conditions overall. (These changes may take effect following Senate approval.)
- TDK activities will remain an important part of the University’s talent development efforts, with continued strong support to promote the creation of high-quality student research papers. While TDK results can provide significant advantages in scholarship applications, further studies, and employment, the University’s TDK awards have also been multiplied.
- TDK papers may continue to serve as the basis for theses. Previous TDK placements must be indicated at the beginning of the thesis so that reviewers and members of the final examination committee can take them into account.
- In the case of works that achieved OTDK placements in previous years, the benefits provided by the earlier regulations will remain valid in the student’s current programme at the time of submitting the TDK paper.
