1) For students enrolled at English language MA Programmes

To graduate, students must demonstrate at least B2-level professional language proficiency in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Russian. To meet this requirement, students must complete both of the following requirements:

1) completing the foreign language course specified in your curriculum,

2) fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis.

1) Completing the foreign language subject:

Your curriculum includes the completion of the following subject:

Foreign Language for economics and social sciences (English)

Information regarding the completion of this subject:

• The required entry level for completing this course is B2.
• If you believe that your language skills do not meet the required language level for completing the subject (and the language assessment test may confirm this), you can improve your language proficiency through individual effort or by taking elective foreign language courses offered by the Centre for Foreign Languages and Language Exams.
• This course can be taken and completed in any semester.
• IMPORTANT! If you enrol in this course but do not successfully complete it, you must enrol in it again in a subsequent semester until you successfully pass it. Completion of this course is a compulsory graduation requirement.

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis

Students enrolled at English language programmes must process the academic literature for their master’s thesis in the language of the programme.

This requirement is part of the completion criteria for the ‘Master’s Thesis’ course.

Additional language learning opportunities:

To prepare for the above foreign language requirements or to develop other language skills and related competencies, you may enrol at:

• additional elective foreign language courses in German, French, Italian, Russian, or Spanish,
• occasionally, elective foreign language courses beyond the six highlighted languages may also be available (under similar conditions, but potentially at a beginner level),
• courses focusing on culture and country studies, offered as elective courses.

(All of these courses are worth 3 credits as optional subjects.)

• Students may enrol in these foreign language courses free of charge, provided that the following conditions are met:
• During your studies, you may enrol at up to 4 foreign language courses free of charge as elective courses.
• The university applies a capacity utilisation fee if a student does not meet the course requirements (Student Requirements System (HKR) Section 113, Paragraph (11)).

2) For students enrolled at the English language MA Programmes:

To graduate, students must demonstrate at least B2-level professional language proficiency in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Russian. To meet this requirement, students must complete both of the following requirements:

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis

Students enrolled in English-language programmes must use academic literature in two languages when writing their thesis, one of which must be English (the language of the programme). In addition to English, at least five sources must be consulted in a second foreign language.

This requirement is part of the completion criteria for the ‘Master’s Thesis’ course.

Additional language learning opportunities:

To prepare for the above foreign language requirements or to develop other language skills and related competencies, you may enrol in:

• additional elective foreign language courses in German, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish or Hungarian for international students,
• occasionally, elective foreign language courses beyond the six highlighted languages may also be available (under similar conditions, but potentially at a beginner level),
• courses focusing on culture and country studies, offered as elective courses.

A) For students enrolled at English language BA Programmes

This course encompasses the basics of professional terminology and provides an introduction to the basics of ‘BGE university life’ in a foreign language; thus, the completion of this course is mandatory for all students and cannot be substituted by completing another subject or holding an existing foreign language certificate.

Information regarding the completion of this subject:

• The required entry level for completing this subject is B2.
• If you believe that your language skills do not meet the required language level for completing the subject (and the language assessment test may confirm this), you can improve your language proficiency through individual effort or by taking elective foreign language courses offered by the Centre for Foreign Languages and Language Exams.
• This course can be taken and completed in any semester.
• IMPORTANT! If you enrol in this course but do not successfully complete it, you must enrol in it again in a subsequent semester until you successfully pass it. Completion of this course is a compulsory graduation requirement.

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the thesis

B) For students enrolled at bilingual BA Programmes

(International Business Economics, and Tourism and Hospitality BA Programmes)

To graduate, students must demonstrate at least B2-level professional language proficiency in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Russian. To meet this requirement, students must complete both of the following requirements:

1) completing the foreign language course specified in your curriculum,

2) fulfilling the language requirement for your thesis.

1) Completing foreign language courses:

Your curriculum requires the mandatory completion of two courses from the following list:

• Foreign language for business and social sciences (English)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (German)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (French)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (Spanish)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (Italian)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (Russian)

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least intermediate-level (B2) professional proficiency in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Russian. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  completing the foreign language subject specified in your curriculum,

2)  fulfilling the language requirement for your thesis.

1)  Completing the foreign language subject:

Your curriculum mandates the completion of the following compulsory subject: 

• Foreign Language for Business and Social Sciences (English) 

This subject encompasses the basics of professional terminology and provides an introduction to the foundations of ‘BUEB university life’ in a foreign language; thus, the completion of this subject is mandatory for all students and cannot be substituted by completing another subject or holding an existing foreign language certificate.

Information regarding the completion of this subject:

• The required entry level for completing this subject is B2.
• A language assessment test will help you determine whether your current knowledge meets the required entry level.
• If you believe that your language skills do not meet the required language level for completing the subject (and the language assessment test may confirm this), you can improve your language proficiency through individual effort or by taking optional language subjects.
• The subject can be taken and completed in any semester.
• IMPORTANT! If you enrol at the subject but do not complete it, you can enrol at it again in a subsequent semester and you must enrol at it to fulfil the requirement.

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the thesis

Students enrolled in English language programmes must use the language of the programme to process the academic literature required for their thesis.

This requirement is part of the completion criteria for the ‘Thesis’ subject.

• additional optional foreign language courses in German, French, Italian, Russian, or Spanish (these typically start at the B2 level, provided the minimum group size is met),

1)  completing the foreign language subject specified in your curriculum,

2)  fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis.

You are not required to complete the above subject

• if you are a Hungarian citizen and meet any of the following criteria:
• you hold a B2 level comprehensive English language certificate, or
• you achieved at least 60% on an advanced-level English language secondary school leaving exam, or
• you completed your BA programme in one of the six specified foreign languages, or
• during your previous student status at BUEB, you successfully completed either the ‘Üzleti és társadalomtudományi idegen nyelv’ or ‘Foreign language for business and social sciences’ subject.
• if you are a foreign citizen and:
• you completed your BA programme in one of the six specified foreign languages (English, German, French, Russian, Italian, or Spanish), or
• you hold an IELTS foreign language examination score of at least 5.5, or
• during your previous student status at BUEB, you successfully completed either the ‘Üzleti és társadalomtudományi idegen nyelv’ or ‘Foreign language for business and social Sciences’ subject.

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis

Students enrolled at English language programmes must process the academic literature for their master’s thesis in the language of the programme.

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least intermediate-level (B2) professional proficiency in two foreign languages from the following: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Russian. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  completing the foreign language subjects specified in your curriculum,

2)  fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis.

1) Completing foreign language subjects:

Your curriculum mandates the completion of the following compulsory subjects: 

• Foreign language for business and social sciences (English)
• Foreign language for business and social sciences (German/French/Spanish/Italian/Russian)

Information regarding the completion of these subjects:

The required entry level for completing these subjects is B2.

• If you believe that your language skills do not meet the required language level for completing the subjects, you can improve your language proficiency through individual effort or by taking optional language subjects.
• These subjects can be taken and completed in any semester.
• IMPORTANT! If you enrol at the subjects but do not complete it, you can enrol at it again in a subsequent semester and you must enrol at it to fulfil the requirement.
• For students enrolled at English language programmes, the subjects must be completed in two languages, one of which must be the language of the programme.

You are not required to complete the above subject

• if you are a Hungarian citizen and meet any of the following criteria:
• you must possess at least a B2 comprehensive language certificate (in any living language), and/or
• you achieved at least 60% on an advanced-level language secondary school leaving exam, or
• you completed your BA programme in one of the six specified foreign languages, and/or
• during your previous student status at BUEB, you successfully completed either the ‘Üzleti és társadalomtudományi idegen nyelv’ or ‘Foreign language for business and social sciences’ subject.
• Both language-related subjects can be substituted if you meet the requirement in two different languages.
• if you are a foreign citizen and:
• you completed your BA programme in one of the six specified foreign languages (English, German, French, Russian, Italian, or Spanish), or
• you must have at least an IELTS score of 5.5 or a CEFR B2-level language exam in any living language that is not your native language, or
• during your previous student status at BGE, you successfully completed either the ‘Üzleti és társadalomtudományi idegen nyelv’ or ‘Foreign Language for Business and Social Sciences’ subject, and
• you are exempt from completing the second ‘Foreign Language for Business and Social Sciences’ course if you have a school-leaving certificate completed in your native language.

2) Fulfilling the language requirement for the master’s thesis

Students enrolled at English language programmes must process academic literature for their master’s thesis in two languages, one of which must be the language of the programme. (For the second language in addition to English, students must process at least 5 academic literatures.)

This requirement is part of the completion criteria for the ‘Master’s Thesis’ subject.

Additional language learning opportunities:

To prepare for the above foreign language requirements or to develop other language skills and related competencies, you may enrol in:

• additional optional foreign language courses in German, French, Italian, Russian, or Spanish (these typically start at the B2 level, provided the minimum group size is met),

1) Business Informatics BA Programme

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in one foreign language. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 semesters):

• IT specialised language 1 (practical grade),
• IT specialised language 2 (practical grade).

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing professional subjects or foreign language skill-development courses.
• In this case, the credits for the subjects completed in a foreign language will count as language credits.

Students enrolled at English language programmes may take the above-mentioned courses in a language different from the language of the programme or may use the credits allocated for these courses to take optional professional courses. 

2) Business Administration and Management, Commerce and Marketing, and Finance and Accounting BA Programmes

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in one foreign language. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 semesters):

• Business Specialised Language I/1 (seminar grade),
• Business Specialised Language I/2 (end-of-term examination).

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing professional subjects or foreign language skill-development courses.
• In this case, the credits for the subjects completed in a foreign language will count as language credits.

Students enrolled at English language programmes may take the above-mentioned courses in a language different from the language of the course or may use the credits allocated for these courses to take optional professional courses. 

3) Communication and Media Science BA Programme

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in one foreign language. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 semesters):

• Communication and Media Studies Specialised Language 1 (seminar grade),
• Communication and Media Studies Specialised Language 2 (seminar grade).

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing professional subjects or foreign language skill-development courses.
• In this case, the credits for the subjects completed in a foreign language will count as language credits.

Students enrolled at English language programmes may take the above-mentioned courses in a language different from the language of the course or may use the credits allocated for these courses to take optional professional courses. 

4) International Business Economics, and Tourism and Hospitality BA Programmes

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in two foreign languages. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 +2 semesters):

• Business Specialised Language I/1 (seminar grade) and Business Specialised Language I/2 (end-of-term examination),
• Business Specialised Language II/1 (seminar grade) and Business Specialised Language II/2 (end-of-term examination).

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing professional subjects or foreign language skill-development courses. (2 subjects can be substituted with one language examination.)
• In this case, the credits for the subjects completed in a foreign language will count as language credits.

The 4 subjects must be completed in 2 languages unless, by the time you earn the pre-degree certificate, you obtain one of the language examinations listed above or pass a professional language final examination in another language. (For example: if you have a level C1 English language certificate, you may study German for 4 semesters.)

Students enrolled at English-taught programmes may take the above-mentioned courses in a language different from the language of the programme or may use the credits allocated for these courses to take optional professional courses. 

1) International Economy and Business

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in two foreign languages. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 +2 semesters):

• International Business Specialised Language A/1 seminar grade) and International Business Specialised Language A/2 (practical grade),
• International Business Specialised Language B/1 (seminar grade) and International Business Specialised Language B/2 (seminar grade).

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing foreign language professional subjects. (2 subjects can be substituted with one language exam.)
• In this case, the credits for the subjects completed in a foreign language will count as language credits.

The 4 subjects must be completed in 2 languages unless, by the time you earn the pre-degree certificate, you obtain one of the language exams listed above. (For example: if you have a level C1 English language certificate, you may study German for 4 semesters.)

Students enrolled at English language programmes may take the above-mentioned courses in a language different from the language of the programme or may use the credits allocated for these courses to take optional professional courses.

2) International Relations

 Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in two foreign languages. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (2 semesters):

• Completion of International Economic Relations and EU Specialised Language 1 (seminar grade),
• Completion of International Economic Relations and EU Specialised Language 2 (seminar grade),

The credits for specialised language courses can be substituted:

• If you possess a level C1 state-recognised comprehensive language examination or level B2 professional comprehensive language examination, you can substitute the credits for your specialised language courses by completing foreign language professional subjects.

Upon completing your programme, you must demonstrate at least an intermediate (B2) level of professional foreign language proficiency in one foreign language. To meet this requirement, the language proficiency obligations include:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subject prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completing the specialised language subject:

• Completion of IT Specialised Language (seminar grade).

The credits for the specialised language course can be substituted:

1)  Completion of the specialised language subjects prescribed in your curriculum is required.

1)  Completion of specialised language subjects (3 semesters):

• Completion of Business Foreign Language A/1 (seminar grade),
• Completion of Business Foreign Language A/2 (seminar grade),
• Completion of Management Specialised Language A / Commerce and Marketing Specialised Language / Finance and Accounting Specialised Language (end-of-term examination).

• Completion of Business Foreign Language B/2 (seminar grade),
• Completion of International Business Specialised Language B / Tourism and Hospitality Specialised Language B (end-of-term examination).
