Mental Health / Psychological Counselling
Mental Health / Psychological Counselling

The university aims to provide support for managing any mental health challenges that may arise during your studies. Through our free mental health counselling, you can work with our professionals in a safe and inclusive environment to discover and build upon your own internal resources.

Who can make use of the service?

● It is free of charge for all BUEB students with an active student status.

● Students who have not yet participated in the university’s student counselling during the given academic year (a maximum of six sessions may be used per academic year).

● Anyone can apply, regardless of their faculty

● Important: Please avoid "dual relationships" (do not choose a psychologist who has been your instructor or whom you know personally).

EMERGENCY PROTOCOL – Quick Guide

If you need immediate, urgent help, or if your safety or the safety of others is at risk, follow the steps below!

In case of an acute life-threatening situation…

(suicide attempt, severe self-harm, complete loss of reality, severe disorientation, or uncontrollable aggression endangering others)

CALL 112 IMMEDIATELY

● In such a case, the most important thing is for the person involved to receive appropriate support. Paramedics and emergency services can provide immediate professional help.

Do you need urgent support?

If your problems feel overwhelming and you need urgent support (e.g., in case of suicidal thoughts or severe emotional difficulties), please follow the steps below:

Action to take:

● Visit the Psychiatric Care Centre corresponding to your place of residence.

You need a National Health Insurance (TAJ) or a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in order to use the service.

● In case of a crisis, you may visit:

○ Semmelweis University – Adult Emergency Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic (Semmelweis Egyetem Felnőtt Sürgősségi Pszichiátriai Szakambulancia)

Address: 1083 Budapest, Balassa street 6.

Please note, that in an acute life threating situation you will be given urgent care even without a TAJ (national health insurance) or an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), just  with a proof of ID, however the care provided will be billed to you later.

If you have a private health insurance, please check if psychiatric and mental health care is covered by it. Basic and medium packages do NOT usually cover either of them.

○ Péterfy Crisis Outpatient Clinic (Péterfy Krízis Ambulancia)

Adress: 1076 Budapest, Péterfy Sándor str. 8-20.

Míra Borbála Karas, psychologist.

“A warm welcome to you!

I earned my degree at ELTE, specialising in Counselling and School Psychology. During my thesis research and subsequent professional internships, I focused primarily on women's well-being, social inequalities, motherhood, and issues related to feminism.

I gained most of my professional experience working with university students: I volunteered as a peer counsellor, worked as a university psychologist and trainer, and held psychoeducational programs in English for international students. As a research assistant at the University of Seville, I contributed to a scientific publication and participated in developing an empathy-building intervention. Alongside my university work, I am currently participating in the family and couples therapist training of the Hungarian Family Therapy Association, which further deepens my systemic thinking.

I believe that the foundation of counselling is a safe, accepting environment and a collaborative partnership. University years hold many challenges—gaining independence, fitting into new communities, performance expectations, and planning for the future—so it is no wonder that we sometimes feel stuck.

During my psychological counselling sessions, I can support you in the following areas:

●    strengthening self-awareness and self-confidence,

●    managing stress and anxiety,

●    motivation and learning difficulties, time management issues,

●    social, family, or relationship problems; gaining independence from parents,

●    challenges related to women’s life situations,

●    Life-management blocks and decision-making situations.

Feel free to reach out to me if you wish to work in a supportive and accepting environment to find and mobilise your own internal resources.”

Ferenc Végh, psychologist

I completed my psychology studies at the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged, specialising in Clinical and Health Psychology. Recently, I obtained my pre-degree certificate (absolutorium) from the Postgraduate Counselling Psychology program at ELTE. Regarding my methodology, I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) consultant and a certified Business Coach. My professional interests include, among others, mood regulation techniques, childhood emotional wounds, the psychology of trauma, and altered states of consciousness.

Feel free to reach out to me if you are feeling stuck in your life, if you are unable to move forward, or if you are going through a distressing event (such as bereavement, divorce, a breakup, or a serious illness). I can also support you if you face an important decision and lack clarity, if you are under immense pressure, or if you want to make a change but feel you lack the courage or means to do so. Whether you are deeply worried about something, facing a prolonged conflict, dissatisfied with yourself, unsure of your career path, or feeling mistreated at home or at work—or even if you simply just 'don't feel well'—I am here for you. Change is possible. I warmly welcome you and will help you find the solution that works for you.

How to register

Registration for counselling is done via email directly to the counsellors. Our psychologists will respond to your inquiry within 2–3 working days at the latest.

When registering, please include the following in your email:

● your Neptun code and your faculty,

● describe the issue you are facing in a few sentences (this helps the counsellor prepare),

● your preferred time slots (this speeds up the scheduling process).

– The time slots offered by the counsellors are not reserved, so the sooner you respond, the more likely it is that you will be able to continue your sessions at a time that suits you.

– Our counsellors’ capacity may be fully booked at certain times, therefore we cannot guarantee an immediate start. If you feel that you are in a crisis situation requiring urgent support, please review the relevant sections of our website and make sure to indicate this when registering.

– Following the scheduling of an appointment, the student is required to complete a consent form, which will be sent by the counsellor. By completing the document, the student also accepts the data processing notice (https://uni-bge.hu/hu/dokumentumok/73431/tajekoztato-dokumentumok/adatkezelesi-tajekoztatok/mentalhigienes-tanacsadas/english_adatkezelesi-tajekoztato_hallgatoi-tanacsadas_20251022-1.pdf).

The completed and signed PDF must be returned to the counsellor no later than before the first session.

Locations

You can find our counselling rooms at three locations.

  1. Alkotmány street campus – ground floor, room 36
  2. Markó street campus – 1st floor, room 138/a

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Counselling

How does counselling work?

The sessions take place at a pre-arranged time agreed upon with the counsellor. You will work with a qualified psychologist within a confidential framework. While sessions are primarily held in person, online consultations are also available upon request. The service is free of charge for all currently active students of the university.

What can I expect during the process?

We will work together on a goal or problem brought by you. This is a short-term, goal-oriented psychological/mental health counselling that focuses on resolving the difficulties of your current life situation. The work is a collaborative process: as the client, you will be an active participant in the solution, as we work together to alleviate your difficulties by building on your experiences, insights, and resources. To facilitate this, the psychologist creates an accepting and supportive environment and helps you map out and mobilise your internal and external resources.

What is NOT covered by counselling?

Counselling is not a substitute for healthcare services, emergency interventions, psychotherapy, or psychiatric treatment

If you require urgent specialist assistance that falls outside the scope of counselling, please review the contacts listed under the heading "What should I do if I feel I need urgent help?"
