One of BBU's primary missions is to provide its students with a comprehensive understanding of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Each semester, we extend the opportunity for them to engage in courses centered around sustainability. Our lecturers continually enhance their courses to integrate the latest trends in sustainability, ensuring that our graduates possess current knowledge relevant to the labor market.
Every six months, the Office of Sustainability and Equal Opportunities at BBU organizes a four-day intensive course, "Sustainability Challenges and Business Solutions," held during Project Week. During this time, students delve into sustainability as they collaborate with practicing business professionals and engage in group project work, foregoing their autumn and spring breaks. Prior to the course, participants can experience the No Plan(et) B Sustainability Escape Room created by BBU.
Members of the BBU Sustainability Network provide sustainability courses in both English and Hungarian. In these courses, students acquire theoretical knowledge and practical professional skills through plant visits and time spent with corporate partners.
In line with our Development Strategy, sustainability takes center stage in our educational activities. More than 100 of our courses specifically address sustainability or highlight its relevance to various fields of study.
These courses comprehensively cover sustainability in a holistic manner, emphasizing the importance of the field. In this way, we can achieve positive societal impact through our students, enabling them to identify the ethical, social responsibility, and sustainability aspects of various business activities and apply these considerations in their decision-making processes.
The content and teaching methods of these courses help students not only gain knowledge of the United Nations' sustainable development goals but also familiarize themselves with both domestic and international guidelines and organizations. Through this comprehensive understanding, they acquire up-to-date knowledge about the expectations and frameworks for business decisions.
Our students will be capable of recognizing both local and global problems and developing possible solutions in various areas of domestic and international relations and collaborations. Thanks to diverse teaching methods and the multi-faceted approach to sustainability, our students also develop numerous soft skills. This makes them more sensitive to societal issues that not only influence business decision-making but also consider the economic consequences of those decisions. These skills include project-based thinking, solving sustainability issues, and critically constructing their own business models.
Several courses focus on responsible and sustainable businesses, sometimes featuring guest speakers from these sectors. Topics covered include sustainable workplaces, corporate social responsibility (CSR), social responsibility, corporate responsibility, and ethical operation.
An emphasized area is exploring the connections between healthy and sustainable nutrition and presenting contradictions, promoting a lifestyle that preserves environmental values, and introducing elements of a healthy and sustainable diet. We find it important to present key issues related to sustainability in the context of food safety, exploring the connections between sustainable food production and food safety, and highlighting the responsibilities of the hospitality industry in this area.
Thus, our students will be able to recognize dilemmas related to sustainability in decision-making and engage in meaningful debates supported by substantial arguments. In their future work, they will be able to consciously apply the knowledge accumulated in the fields of responsible corporate operation and sustainability, understand and interpret key parts of the EU sustainability regulatory package (SFRD, Taxonomy Regulation, CSRD), sustainable investment strategies, ESG benchmarks, and ESG assessments.
Throughout the education process, sustainability not only aids our students in future business decision-making but also contributes to their ability to act more sustainably in their everyday lives and activities, taking into account the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their individual decisions.
