Absztrakt:
This study examined systematic behavioral responses (seating choices) to different design-ensemble configurations in a simulated version of a lounge in a creative workplace. The case- study setting was composed of five rooms based on a real-life project. A design team of practicing architects created two design ensembles that differed only in their surface qualities (colors, materials, etc.); the layout and seating configuration of the spaces were fixed. The study compared the seating-choice patterns of users in four design-ensemble configurations, two homogeneous (the same design ensemble was used in all five rooms) and two heterogeneous (one design ensemble was used in four of the rooms, and the other ensemble was used in the fifth room). The study focused on the design-ensemble preferences of participants in specific social situations that differed based on participants’ assumed willingness to engage in coincidental encounters, a major component of creative workplaces. The results suggest that design ensembles and their surface qualities are both relevant physical variables to investigate, as systematic behavioral responses were observed in some cases. Furthermore, they indicate that certain configurations of surface qualities could be used to fine-tune the potential behavioral effects of specific room configurations.
