About the Exams

BUEB FLEU operates the following three examination systems for

·       business communication purposes (monolingual),

·       tourism-hospitality purposes (bilingual),

·       business purposes (bilingual).

Mediation skills are measured in bilingual exams; therefore, the Hungarian language is an integral part of these exams. Exams in all three systems can be

·       oral (consisting of listening comprehension and speaking subtests),

·       written (consisting of reading comprehension and writing subtests),

·       complex (consisting of oral and written exam sections).

Exams can be done at three levels:

·       B1 (CEFR Threshold level),

·       B2 (CEFR Vantage level),

·       C1 (CEFR Effective Operational Proficiency level).   

The structure of monolingual and bilingual exams is different. The exams of the two bilingual examination systems are formally identical, but their content and vocabulary are specialized for the given major. From the seven languages, the following languages can be selected in each professional language examination system:

·       Business communication: English and German,

·       Tourism-hospitality: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish,

·       Business: French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Japanese.

         The Office organizes three examination periods a year. A tabular summary of the exams that can be taken can be viewed here.

         The rules for participating in the exams are detailed in the exam regulations. The most important information about the written exams can be found here and about the oral exams here.

         The exam is successful if the candidate obtains 60% of the total score and a minimum score of 40% for each specific skill (except for the grammar test, in which the result cannot be 0 points). In the case of a complex exam, it is not necessary to achieve 60% in the written and oral parts separately in order for the complex exam to be successful. If a candidate registers for a complex examination and fails either the oral or the written examination, but the score for one of the sections is above the passmark and his/her result per skill receives a minimum score of 40%, s/he will receive an oral or written type certificate. BUEB FLEU organizes three examination periods per year. The related deadlines and the possible exams therein will be published on its website one year in advance.

         BUEB FLEU's exam systems are open, so anyone who has reached the age of 14 can register for exams. Accordingly, the Examination Office also allows applications from persons with special needs (e.g. disabled people) and non-Hungarian native speakers.

         Registering for the exams becomes valid by providing the required information for the exam and by paying the examination fee. The data are to be entered online on the relevant website of the Examination Office. It is possible to pay the exam fee by credit/debit card or bank transfer.          A summary table of all exams announced in the current exam period can be found here. The Examination Office reserves the right not to organize an originally announced examination in the event of an insufficient number of applicants. In addition, the Office may subsequently announce an accredited examination that was not originally included in the original list.

         Candidates will find the exact location and time of the exams (the exam schedule) on their online registration platform at the pre-announced time. The Office will not send special written notification by post.

         Candidates have the option to postpone their exams within a specified time frame and they may also withdraw from their exams. The rules for postponement and withdrawal can be read here.

         Each candidate will receive a brief e-mail informing him/her of the result of their exam (successful or unsuccessful) by the 30th day after the first exam event of the exam period. Detailed exam results can be viewed on the candidates' online registration platform.

The Examination Office will issue a bilingual language examination certificate for successful candidates within 60 days of the examination event and will not send a separate written notice of a successful examination. Certificates can be picked up at a time announced in advance in the exam calendar or will be mailed at that time. Due to legal regulations the Examination Office may not issue an official certificate of successful examination until the completion of the certificate. Within 15 days from the date of the notification of the results, candidates may request a reassessment of their papers with reference to (1) the assessment of the examination, (2) an infringement of the law or (3) a numerical error in the calculation of the results. The Examination Office allows its candidates to view their papers and it also provides candidates with professional advice on their performance and possible future preparation. Information on viewing and consultation can be found here.

The monolingual exam is shorter than the bilingual since there are no mediation (translation), and grammatical competence subtests in the former. Furthermore, candidates can use print dictionaries in the written part of the monolingual exam. 

Yes, of course, but you need to take into consideration that the date of these exams may overlap, and you cannot be informed about this before the complete exam schedule is finalized. If there is a scheduling conflict, candidates may postpone or withdraw from any of the two. 

Yes, of course, because you can register online at the Examination Office’s website with an electronic registration form. The examination fee is payable by bank transfer or credit/debit card.

Unfortunately, it is not.

When the exam schedule is complete our online administration system will automatically send you an email informing you that the exact time and location of your exam can be viewed on your online registration platform. 

If you lose your ID before the exam, you can participate in the exam with another official document (passport or driving licence) which clearly proves your identity. Also, you need to declare with awareness of criminal liability that this official document is your property.  

This is the case, yes. The reason for this is that the listening comprehension subtest is also conducted in writing. 

Unfortunately, you cannot. Due to the correction process, all results are given following completion of the exam in its entirety.

Yes, you can. Even if you fail the complex exam, but one part, the written or the oral is successful on its own, a certificate will be issued. 

The Office is obliged to make the certificates available for the successful candidates within 60 days after the exam period is finished. In case you do not get your certificate, call the Office and our colleagues will check whether the certificate has been dispatched. If it has, but you still have not got that, you need to write a letter to the Office in which you declare with awareness of criminal liability that you have not received the certificate in spite of the fact that it has been posted. After that the Office will launch an investigation at the Hungarian Post.

BUEB FLEU provides a translation about the certificates released before May 2005 for a transaction fee of 5000HUF. 

The Office does not organize retake exams. Unsuccessful candidates may register for an exam organized in the forthcoming examination period.  

Both the Office and its examination systems were accredited in May 2000. Exams taken before this date are not accredited by the state; therefore, we are not entitled to issue a copy or an official statement.
