About BUEB in a nutshell

The Budapest University of Economics and Business (BUEB) is the largest university of economics in Hungary and the fourth largest university overall, with nearly 20,000 students currently enrolled.

BUEB is the market leader in all undergraduate economics programmes, with the majority of Hungarian economists graduating here. It also admits the highest number of students to Business Information Technology as well as Communication and Media Studies undergraduate programmes, and its International Relations programme is the second largest in the country by enrolment.

BUEB has traditionally adopted a practice-oriented approach, offering the most widely recognised Hungarian degree—one that is held in high esteem and can be mentioned with pride throughout a lifetime. In addition to delivering up-to-date education, BUEB supports students’ post-graduation success through a wide range of programmes, mentoring opportunities, and its own dedicated job portal.

Within our student community of nearly 20,000, lifelong friendships are formed, while the University and its student organisations offer a wide variety of programmes catering to the most diverse interests. By joining the BUEB Alumni Community, our graduates become members of the largest business community in Hungary.

BUEB for life

"Among the major Hungarian universities, BUEB has undoubtedly undergone one of the most remarkable developments over the past decade – a process that is still far from complete. The University’s internal structure has been renewed, and alongside this, our teaching has become even more modern and up to date. We have further developed our curricula by adapting the latest international teaching materials and drawing on our extensive network of business partnerships. We have embarked on the development of a new campus, where students enrolling over the coming years are likely to complete their studies. "

György Andor
Rector of BUEB

The history of BUEB

The history of our University dates back to 1857, when BUEB’s predecessor – the Pest Academy of Commerce – was founded in response to the professional challenges of the era. This institution – expanded in 1899 with the establishment of the Eastern Academy of Commerce – became the first college of commerce in Central Europe, and within it, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This school trained professionals for the fields of commerce and banking. In 1969, it was transformed into the College of Commerce, Catering and Tourism.

Meanwhile, higher education in another branch of economics began in 1962 with the establishment of the Higher Institute of Finance and Accountancy, which, from 1970, expanded its scope of education as the College of Finance and Accountancy.

In parallel with these developments, the Correspondence School of Foreign Trade was established in 1957 to train highly qualified, multilingual professionals for Hungarian foreign trade; from 1971, it continued its operations under the name College of Foreign Trade.

Finally, the three predecessor institutions of today’s BUEB merged in 2000, and with its attainment of university status in 2016, it became the Budapest Business University, operating under the name Budapest University of Economics and Business from 1 February 2025.
