One of Europe's most famous music festivals takes place every August on Budapest's Óbuda Island. Sziget attracts visitors from more than 100 countries and offers much more than live music. Besides internationally renowned artists, you can also enjoy theatre, circus performances, art installations, workshops and cultural programmes throughout the festival. Even if you are not planning to attend for several days, a single-day ticket is a great way to experience one of Budapest's most iconic international events.
If you are looking to escape the city for a day or a weekend, August is the perfect time to visit Lake Balaton.
Whether you choose the historic streets of Tihany, the lively promenade of Balatonfüred or one of the many beaches around the lake, Balaton offers swimming, sailing, cycling and beautiful sunsets. It remains Hungary's favourite summer destination for both locals and visitors.

Every August, the city of Debrecen hosts one of Hungary's most colourful annual celebrations. The Flower Carnival features enormous floral floats, music, dance performances and cultural events that transform the city centre into a festive open-air celebration.

If there is one event you should not miss during your time in Hungary, it is the celebrations on 20 August.
Known as St. Stephen's Day, Hungary's National Day commemorates the foundation of the Hungarian state and its first king, Saint Stephen. It is the country's most important national holiday and is celebrated with events throughout the day, including concerts, military displays, cultural programmes and food festivals.
The highlight comes after sunset, when Budapest hosts one of the largest fireworks shows in Europe. Thousands of fireworks are launched from multiple locations along the Danube, creating a spectacular display above the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle and the city's historic bridges.
Watching the fireworks from the riverbanks or one of Budapest's viewpoints is an unforgettable experience and one that many international students remember long after they leave Hungary.
