Hungary in a Day: Easy Trips from Budapest, Visegrád Edition

Less than 1.5 hours from Budapest, Visegrád offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Hungary. Located in the heart of the Danube Bend, this small town combines medieval history, nature and outdoor activities, making it an excellent option for international students who want something more active and scenic.

If you are looking for fresh air, impressive views and a short escape from the city, Visegrád is THE ideal placce for you.

Why Visegrád?

Visegrád is famous for its hilltop Citadel overlooking the Danube. The panoramic view of the river winding between forested hills is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in Hungary.

Visegrád is less about urban exploration and more about nature, viewpoints and medieval atmosphere. It is ideal for students who enjoy walking, light hiking and outdoor experiences.

How to Get There from Budapest

Starting point: Budapest University of Economics and Business, City Campus, Alkotmány Street 9–11

Option 1:
-~10 minute walk to Nyugati Pályaudvar
-M3 metro to Újpest-Városkapu
-Hop on Volán bus 880 which takes you to the city directly.
Total travel time approximately 1.5 hours.

Option 2:
- ~10 minute walk to Nyugati Pályaudvar
- Take Z70 train and get off at Nagymaros-Visegrád station.
-From here you can start your ~1 hour light hike to the „Felleg vár”

Both options are accessible with student discounts.

Suggested Day Plan

09:00 Departure from Budapest

10:30 Arrival and Walk Toward the Citadel

The main highlight of Visegrád is the Fellegvár, the hilltop Citadel. The walk uphill takes around 30–40 minutes. It is moderately steep but manageable for most people.

Once at the top, you will see:

• The Danube Bend panorama
• The surrounding Börzsöny and Pilis hills
• Castle walls and medieval exhibition spaces

The viewpoint alone makes the trip worthwhile.

12:30 Explore the Royal Palace

After descending from the Citadel, visit the remains of the Royal Palace of King Matthias. The restored sections give insight into medieval Hungarian royal life.

The palace gardens are also a pleasant place to relax before lunch.

13:30 Lunch Options

Visegrád has several traditional Hungarian restaurants offering regional dishes. Like “Gulyás Csárda” or “Renaissance Étterem”

For a lighter option, there are cafés and small eateries near the main street.

15:00 Optional Activities

Depending on your mood and energy level, you can choose from:

• Visegrád bobsleigh track for a fun and slightly adventurous activity
• Short forest walks in the surrounding hills
• Riverside relaxation near the Danube
• Visiting small local exhibitions or medieval-themed attractions

18:30 Return to Budapest

Public transport runs regularly back to the capital, allowing flexibility.

Estimated Budget

• Return transport with student discount approximately 12–15 Euros
• Citadel or Royal Palace entrance ticket
• Lunch approximately 15–25 Euros

The overall cost remains reasonable for a full outdoor day.

Visegrád offers a completely different perspective of Hungary compared to Budapest. Instead of city architecture, you experience landscape, medieval heritage, and open space.

It is particularly suitable for small friend groups who want an active day with impressive photos and panoramic views. The hike to the Citadel also adds a sense of achievement, making the experience more memorable.
