For many international applicants, the admission interview is the most uncertain part of the application process. At Budapest University of Economics and Business (BUEB), the interview process is designed to be fair, standardised and accessible, while still allowing applicants to demonstrate their motivation and communication skills.
How Does the Online Interview Process Work?
The international admission interview at BUEB starts with an automated online interview. Based on the evaluation of this first interview, only selected applicants are invited to a second, live interview conducted by a university colleague.
Automated Online Interview
In the first step, applicants complete an automated online interview. This interview is not conducted by a university staff member. Instead, applicants respond to pre-defined questions through a digital interview platform.
Key features of the automated interview:
- questions appear on screen and must be read carefully before answering
- answers are recorded via video
- for each question, applicants usually have two opportunities to start a recording
- the second attempt may contain a different question, therefore answers should never be repeated automatically
Applicants are strongly advised to always read the question carefully before starting the recording and to respond specifically to what is being asked.
Live Online Interview
Based on the evaluation of the automated interview and the overall application, some applicants may be invited to a live online interview conducted by a university colleague.
In this case:
- applicants receive an invitation with available interview time slots
- the applicant selects the most suitable time from the offered options
- the interview takes place as a live online conversation
Important: Participation in the live interview is mandatory if an applicant is invited. Failure to attend the scheduled interview without prior notice results in an unsuccessful admission decision.
What Is Assessed During the Interview?
Across both stages of the interview process, the Admission Committee focuses on the following aspects:
- English language proficiency and clarity of communication
- motivation for the chosen programme and for studying at BUEB
- academic background and subject-related preparedness
- overall readiness for studying in an international academic environment
Typical Interview Topics
Depending on the programme and interview stage, applicants may be asked about:
- their previous education and academic background
- reasons for choosing the selected programme
- future academic or career plans
- basic knowledge related to their field of study
- motivation for studying in Hungary
How to Prepare for the Automated Interview
To perform well in the automated interview stage, applicants are advised to:
- avoid assuming that repeated recordings contain the same question
- speak clearly and at a moderate pace
- structure answers logically, even within a short response time
- ensure a quiet environment and stable internet connection
Careful preparation and attention to detail significantly improve interview performance.
What Happens After the Interview?
Once the interview process is completed, applications are evaluated by the Admission Committee. Applicants usually receive an admission decision within 1–2 weeks.
Successful candidates receive a conditional admission offer, outlining the next administrative steps required before enrolment.
