Stipendium Hungaricum

The Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship program was launched in 2013 by the Hungarian Government. The core mission of the program is to increase the number of foreign students in Hungary and to encourage the Hungarian higher education institutions to attract top foreign students. The Programme is based on intergovernmental contracts on educational affairs signed between the Hungarian government and the partner countries. Currently 70 sending partners are engaged in the program.

Thousands of students from all over the world apply for higher educational studies in Hungary each year. Grant proposals are to be submitted in the sending countries by applicants for pre-selection. Following an evaluation process, applications are forwarded to the Tempus Public Foundation.

The program is managed by Tempus Public Foundation.

Applicants with a scholarship pursuing their full BA/BSc, MA/MSc or PhD studies receive the following provisions

No tuition fee
Monthly stipend
  • BA/BSc, MA/MSc students receive HUF 40 460 (cca 130 EUR) per month
  • PhD students who started their studies prior to the 2016/17 academic year are entitled to 100 000 HUF (cca 325 EUR) scholarship per month
  • PhD students who started their studies in the 2016/17 academic year are entitled to HUF 140 000 (cca EUR 435) scholarship per month in the first 2 years / during the training research period and HUF 180.000 per month in the second two years / during the research - dissertation period


Accommodation contribution

From September 2017, dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40 000 to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period 


Free of charge use of library
Medical insurance

The travel costs have to be covered by the applicants.


Supported activities in terms of academic levels

Full time studies
  • BA/BSc (undergraduate 3,5 years)
  • MA/MSc (graduate 2 years)
  • PhD studies (doctoral 4 years)
Part-time studies
  • Preparatory course in Hungarian Language (1 year) 

Application process


Those interested in the scholarship programme can submit their grant proposals to Tempus Public Foundation and the relevant educational unit of their home countries (authorities in the partner countries). Applications shall not be submitted to higher educational institution directly.

Responsibilities of the Student Services Office (Front Office):

  • Administering student card requests
  • Withdrawing student cards
  • administer and store your official study documents (degree, language exam etc.)
  • register you in Neptun system and help you with it during your studies
  • organisation of practical placements/internships as parts of Curriculum
  • issue official study documents:
  • student status confirmation sheets
  • transcripts
  • degree.
