Elecciones generales del 23 de julio de 2023 en España y sus consecuencias. La Presidencia española del Consejo de la Unión Europea címmel jelent meg Domonkos Endre írása a MEDITERRÁN VILÁG 2024/53-54. különszámában.
Absztrakt:
Due to the losses suffered from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in the regional elections on 28 May 2023, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez called early parliamentary elections on 23 July of the same year. Although the People’s Party (PP) obtained 33,05 percent of the votes cast and won 137 seats, it could not form a government because the right-wing party failed to win absolute majority (176 seats) in the Congress of Deputies. Taking into account the fragmentation of the Iberian country, it was not easy to form a stable government, because neither the centre-right nor the left-wing was able to get as close as possible to 176 seats, which shows clearly the restructuring of the party system and the political landscape in Spain.
The objective of my paper is to highlight the general elections of 23 July 2023 and its consequences in the Iberian country. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of the electoral campaign and its impacts on the political life. Finally, the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and its priorities will be evaluated in the second half of 2023. Due to length constraints, the study won’t focus on the main reasons of the independence in Catalonia.
