FCHT – Choosing a Specialisation – an Overview of Steps to be Taken
FCHT – Choosing a Specialisation – an Overview of Steps to be Taken

The Rules

The most important rules for choosing a specialisation can be found in the Requirement System for Students of BUEB, at section 57, points (26)-(27).

The available specialisations and the conditions of choosing them are found in the curriculum description of each degree course (programme).

  • Bachelor programmes curriculums
  • Master's programmes curriculums

The Process

1. Preparations

Students in our BA and MA programmes are provided the opportunity to choose among specialisations. These specialisations offer detailed knowledge of a certain subject area, but do not result in independent qualifications.

The conditions of choosing specialisations are found in the curriculum description of each degree programme. These conditions include:

1. having fulfilled a certain number of credits

2. having successfully completed certain courses

The descriptions of specialisations and their prerequisites in BA programmes are available HERE and HERE.

The descriptions of specialisations and their prerequisites in MA programmes are available HERE.

It is the student’s responsibility to become informed about specialisations. It is suggested to become acquainted with the prerequisites for specialisations at the very beginning of one’s studies, so as to be able to complete them all in time. The departments help students in the process by offering orientation meetings to both BA and MA students on specialisations. Attending these is free for all students and is highly recommended.

During each specialisation registration period these orientation meetings will be held on MS Teams. All interested students may join these Teams meetings.

2. Registration

Registrations for specialisations are done in the Neptun system and take place at the end of the semester before the specialisation begins. Students must choose a minimum of two possible specialisations, and indicate their order of preference. The detailed steps for registering in Neptun can be read HERE.

3. Result

Students with the necessary prerequisites are enrolled in specialisations based on their cumulative credit indexes: The first student in this ranking is enrolled into his/her first preference of specialisation. Each following student is enrolled similarly, until the number of students allocated to a specialisation is reached. Then, students will be enrolled into their second preferences.

Specialisations are opened if a minimum number of students have chosen them. If the number of students choosing a specialisation does not reach the minimum value, these students will be enrolled in their second choice as well.

Students are informed of the results of the allocation process through the Neptun system by the Student Services Group.

4. Enrolling in a second specialisation

Students have the option to enrol in two specialisations within the same degree course during their studies. Taking a second specialisation means taking extra credits. Taking up to 10% more credits than the required number of credits if free of charge, any credits taken above this must be paid for. Accordingly, the number of extra credits that can be taken free of charge are as follows:

  • Commerce and Marketing BA programme – 21 credits
  • Tourism and Catering BA programme – 24 credits
  • Tourism Management MA programme - 12 credits

The total number of credits needed for a specialisation is usually between 24 and 30. If a student wishes to complete a second specialisation without paying for the extra credits, the optional subjects may be used as well. In BA programmes, optional subjects add up to 9-12 credits, in MA programs, to 6 credits. Adding these to the 10% mentioned above, can generally be enough to complete a second specialisation. In this case, the student should be careful not to take any optional courses outside of the second specialisation.

The optional courses can also be used to take just one or two subjects from a second specialisation. (The purpose of optional courses is exactly to allow students to take any course they prefer, above the compulsory courses.)

The wish to enrol in a second specialisation must be indicated via e-mail to the Vice Dean for Education.

5. Registering for courses of the specialisation’s first semester in the Neptun system

The final step of the process is that the Student Services Group matches the model curriculum of the specialisation to the student. After this, the student will see the specialisation’s courses, for which the student will register during registration period.
